The
Business School undertakes research and consultancy in
a range of areas and the output of publications by
Business School staff is growing steadily.
Research in the Business School is organised around
four clusters, often encompassing specialised research
groups where staff and students from many departments
focus on research activities that cut across
departmental boundaries:
Research and consultancy
is a key activity underpinning teaching quality within
the Business School, but it is also an important
contribution to the needs of business and the wider
community in the geographical area served by the
university. The School has a growing reputation at
national and international levels, with the award of
major contracts from the Economic and Social Research
Council, Department of Health and the Department for
Education and Employment. Work has been carried out
for a range of organisations, including both public
and private sector enterprises; government
departments, charities and trade unions. Business
school researchers are also active at international
level, for example in research about central and
eastern Europe, China and South Africa, and a number
of research collaborations with overseas scholars have
resulted in joint publications.
The Business School is
working with major international corporations, such as
IBM, Pfizer, Geo Post and Unilever in the area of
Organisational Dynamics.
In addition to a research group on Knowledge
Management, the School has established the largest
concentration of business network analysts in the UK,
with specialist expertise in the
Social Network Analysis of organisations.
The research community
within the business school is also growing with a
number of PhD/MPhil students in a variety of business
disciplines. The Business School offers a structured
PhD programme with training in research
methods and key skills designed to facilitate
professional research practice.
The Business School also
offers an innovative
MA by Research In Business in both
full-time and part-time mode. This new type of
research degree allows students to develop their
research skills and knowledge through both taught
components and the production of a 25,000 word
dissertation. It provides an excellent training for
those wishing either to undertake further higher
degree research (e.g. PhD/MPhil) or simply to pursue a
career in research management.
