The Pharmacy programme is a four year programme and the courses divide into three interlinked themes:
- The Patient, Disease and Drug Action (two modules per year for three years)
- Practitioner and Patient (one module per year for 4 years)
- Medicinal Products (one module per year for 3 years)
The MPharm is an undergraduate Masters degree with a research methods course in year 3 leading to a sustained research project which constitutes 50% of the final year of the programme.
Teaching
Extensive use is made of problem based learning, seminars, workshops and practical laboratory classes which will occupy approximately two thirds of the programme. All classes will be held on the Medway Campus, with external placements arranged to hospital, community, industry and primary care across the four years of the programme.
Assessment
A variety of assessments are used including practical dispensing examinations, objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs), presentations (individual and group), written reports, essays and final written examinations at the end of each year.
Careers
Pharmacy graduates with an MPharm degree are required to work for one year in practice and to undertake and pass a preregistration examination before they can register as a pharmacist in Great Britain (GB). Career options include hospital, community, primary care and industrial practice, general management and administration as well as research opportunities in industry, academia or government laboratories. There are currently approximately 46,000 pharmacists in GB but there is a shortage of pharmacists to fill recurring vacancies due to the expanding role of the pharmacist.
