How to Get Here

Andy Horne

"The Trust very much welcomes the opening of the Medway School of Pharmacy. We believe the school will act as a stimulus for local pharmacists and ultimately aid recruitment to our Pharmacy team. The school is working with the Pharmacy Department and Research and Development Office at the hospital to encourage research projects that will help to improve our pharmacy services. Clearly this collaboration is in the early stages but we see this as a fantastic opportunity that will benefit the healthcare of the local community."

Courses I

Practicioner and Patient 1 (PP1)
Practicioner and Patient 2
Practicioner and Patient 3
Practicioner and Patient 4

The following four courses look at the relationship between practitioner and patient.

Practioner and Patient 1 (PP1)
This stage 1 course provides the fundamental building blocks for developing professional skills throughout the 4 year programme. Students will start with a 2 week block of study skills including maths, IT, communication and interpersonal skills. Core elements of this course include law & ethics and dispensing practice supported by the use of problem based learning methods to explore the roles and responsibilities of pharmacists and the professional body (the RPSGB).

Practioner and Patient 2
This Stage 2 course is a continuation of the earlier PP1 course and looks at the ethical, professional and social issues relevant to the patient pharmacist relationship. Students will undertake an innovative programme including response to symptoms and non medical prescribing which will place them in an enviable position early in the MPharm programme.

Practioner and Patient 3
This Stage 3 course extends the skills developed in courses PP1 and PP2 to include aseptic dispensing, consultation skills and rational prescribing. In addition this course reviews the developing role of the pharmacist in public health including pharmacoepidemiology, pharmacoeconomics, substance use, national drug policies and treatment guidelines.

Practioner and Patient 4
This Stage 4 course completes the PP part of the programme and pulls together the strands developed throughout previous years culminating in the delivery of pharmaceutical care at an individual patient level. It aims to prepare students for their pre registration year of employment by mastering the practical skills for successful practice in clinical, community and industrial settings together with a personal philosophy of practice that will continue throughout their working lives.
